Alleged Discrimination in the National Police Force
During the past couple of years, an outrage has sparked involving alleged discrimination against African Americans from the National Police Force. Millions of people from around the nation have made their voices heard in result to the incidents. However, no voices were heard louder than the voices in Ferguson, MO.
The following anecdote is according to ABC News. On August 9th, 2015. Michael Brown, an 18-year old from Ferguson, MO, was shot by Missouri police officer, Darren Wilson. Many ‘Black Lives Matter’ supporters argue that Wilson had no business killing an unarmed African American in Michael Brown, while others argue that Brown instigated the fatal incident. After numerous death threats and some time without a job, Darren Wilson spoke out about the incident. Darren Wilson, a Ferguson, MO police officer, was planning on meeting a friend for lunch when the call came in, saying that a ‘theft was in progress’. With the case gone cold, Wilson continued on to lunch. A short while later, Wilson came across two African American teens walking in the street, who perfectly fit the description of the thieves. After a brief altercation, one of the suspects, Michael Brown was shot dead by Darren Wilson. With much ‘blur’ on the actuality of the incident, many bystander viewers view no bias in the case. However, shortly after the incident, Wilson said, “People should stop ‘jumping on race’.” The way Darren tells it, shortly after he saw the two African Americans who perfectly fit the description walking in the street, he called in for backup. Wilson then proceeded to back his car up in order to cut off the two suspects. Shortly after opening his door and calling to the two, Brown made some profane remarks in Darren’s direction. After a long struggle, Wilson finally had Brown in a safe position for the both of them. He then shot Michael Brown. Investigators still do not know exactly what happened.
One organization that works for the African American liberation movement is ‘Black Lives Matter’. The main goal of ‘Black Lives Matter’ is to ‘liberate’ the African American demographic from being held powerless by the state and by the nation. Over the past two and a half years or so, ‘Black Lives Matter’ has grown into a national and political power. Over millions of Americans have joined the movement to better African American lives. Some of the key beliefs that ‘Black Lives Matter’ has are to practice empathy and justice. They also believe that acknowledging people’s differences among commonalities should be celebrated, not criticized. In 2013, Alicia Garza and a few others founded ‘Black Lives Matter’ on fundamental ideas to shape culture back into equality.
Although racial disparities have fused its way across America, Black Lives Matter and many other Americans are fighting for a better nation and a better world for colored people. Despite racial altercations and violent protests, organizations like Black Lives Matter will continue to fight for what they believe is right, national equality.
