Lives Matter

In 2013, there were 41,149 suicides in the United States. Thats an average of 113 suicides every day which made it the 10th leading cause of death in 2013. Suicide is a serious issue and isn't going away. Suicide rates have been slowly climbing ever since the year 2000. Some say this is because of the decrease in financial standings for lots of families. Suicide rates have increased in the past whenever financial standings were lowered so it could be the reason. Others say that it is because of the increasing access to deadly items like drugs and firearms. Either way, suicide is still happening and causes more deaths a year than car crashes.

On November 21, 2001, Morgan Musson took two powerful painkillers before she went to bed and died. Morgan’s suicide was not a mystery, since she suffered severe bullying at school. Morgan tried moving schools to get away from her attackers but they were part of a gang that spread over multiple schools. Morgan’s new school, Ellis Guilford, refused to suspend the girls bullying her, and tried to offer other solutions. Nothing seemed to work. Then, after fighting with one of her friends on Wednesday the 21, Morrigan took her life. The next day Debra Savage, Morrigan's mother, walked into Morrigan's room and almost instantly realized the truth. “I knew she was dead. It was a mother's instinct”, Debra told reporters. Since Morrigan's school had refused to suspend the tormentors, they took some of the blame. When questioned, head teacher Peter Plummer refused to comment on any individuals but instead responded with, ”We have a comprehensive anti-bullying policy which has been commended by Ofsted inspectors recently”. The school believes that they have a working anti-bullying system, but as Ms. Savage said, if the school would have taken “effective action” to deal with bullying, she might still have her daughter.

In an attempt to reduce suicides, the USA created the suicide support network NSPL. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL) is a emotional support network that provides free assistance to people in a suicidal crisis and has been supporting people since 2007. Lifelines are open 24/7, and all calls are confidential and toll-free. With over 150 centers across the US, NSPL combines experienced suicide counselors with people who have attempted suicide or lost loved ones to suicide to form its effective counseling program. Counselors also can refer individuals to mental health or any rehabilitation center needed for the patient. For more information, visit www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org.

In 2013, suicide was the tenth leading cause of death in the USA, and an estimated 2.7 million people made plans to commit suicide. Suicide is everywhere, and on the rise. In American history, suicide rates tend to rise and fall, but there is no telling when or how rates will drop and people will no longer have the urge to commit suicide. waiting is not an option. The time is now
