Women's Equality
Women get paid less than men in almost every career out there. In 2014 alone women workers got paid 79 cents for every dollar a man would make in the same job, creating the wage gap 21% difference. Women, on average, receive more education than men, yet they still get paid less. Women in high paying jobs get paid less than a male worker working below them. With women getting paid less than men some women will need to work more than men in order to get the same pay. For a single mother, this takes her away from her kids for her to be able to take care of her kids. The wage gap between women and men is an issue that needs to be addressed.
Ken Auletta wrote an article for The New Yorker about Jill Abramson, who was the managing editor of New York Times magazine and the first woman to have that job. She was then replaced by Baquet, the first African - American to hold the job. She was fired before she even had the job for three full years. Jill was fired for causing too many problems. She had found out that an employee below her, a man, was being paid more than her. This has not been the first time that has happened to her; it happened through all the years she worked for the Times. It did not just happen to her; there is a long history at Times for them being sued for that problem. Jill even tried multiple times to fix the problem, but instead got fired.
The American Association of University Women, or AAUW, is an American organization founded in 1881. The AAUW “advances equity for women and girls” . They help women and girls in many different ways. They teach women skills to be able to negotiate their pay and to close the pay gap between men and women. They do research of the inequality of women in jobs and schooling. They gather college students, all girls, in order to discuss leadership issues and ways they can improve their campuses. Those are just a few ways they help. In everything the AAUW does they help women through it, but this organization does not hold their hand the whole way. They empower women and give them support to do what is needed. This is an organization working towards the equality of women in society today.
Women are not treated equally in society. Women deserve to be treated as equals. People like Jill Abramson and organizations like AAUW are working towards women's equality. Anyone can help with this issue, just bringing it to attention can help. Nothing is too simple to help.
